Khipu Research Labs operates from a distinct methodological position that shapes all framework development. This position addresses the fundamental tension between the desire for quantitative precision and the inherent complexity of cultural-economic systems.
1. Methods Over Predictions
We prioritize modeling architecture and methodology over predictive claims. Our frameworks are designed as decision-support tools for exploration, not predictive engines. This distinction matters because:
- Complex systems involving culture, behavior, and institutions resist precise prediction
- The value of modeling lies in structured exploration of possibilities, not forecasting
- Overconfident predictions can mislead policymakers and harm communities
2. Epistemic Transparency

What Our Frameworks Cannot Do
Honest methodology requires acknowledging limitations. Our frameworks are not appropriate for:
Predictive Forecasting
We do not predict specific numerical outcomes. Our scenarios illustrate possible dynamics under stated assumptions, not forecasts of what will happen.
Policy Optimization
Our frameworks quantify trade-offs but cannot determine “optimal” policy. That requires normative judgments and democratic deliberation beyond any model’s scope.
Regulatory Compliance
Validation status is explicitly tracked. Until frameworks complete empirical calibration and peer review, they should not be used for regulatory determinations.
Automated Decision-Making
Human judgment remains essential. Our tools support deliberation; they do not replace it.
Assumptions and Their Consequences
All models rest on assumptions that enable tractability while constraining applicability. We enumerate key assumptions explicitly:
Market Structure: Competitive markets with flexible prices. This may overstate adjustment efficiency in economies with frictions, monopoly power, or price rigidities.
